Who can study in Spain?
Any international student can study in Spain. By “international,” we mean a student who has not previously studied in Spain, regardless of whether they are Spanish or not. However:

Types of international students by origin
According to the definition of an international student we gave earlier, anyone can study in Spain, regardless of their nationality or previous education system. However, not all international students are the same type or must follow the same procedures. Therefore, we can distinguish between:
EU Students: Required Documentation and Coverage to Study in Spain
For students from the EU, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, the requirements and procedures to study in Spain are much simpler. In their case, a student visa is not necessary.
1.- Identity Documentation from Your Country
You must have a valid passport or national identity card from your country.
2. Academic Requirements for Universities (Before Arriving in Spain)
If you have a valid passport or national identity card, you can start the application process with the Spanish university where you want to study. This is, in fact, the first step you must take as a student. It is done from your home country and is necessary to continue with all other procedures. The first requirement is admission to a university based on your entry grades and qualifications. Without this, the rest of the process makes no sense. Below, we detail the requirements and documents needed for university admission.
a) UNEDasiss Access Credential
For students coming from EU education systems, it is not necessary to validate their high school diploma to enter a Spanish university. They can simply request accreditation through UNEDasiss, which will convert their home country grades to the Spanish system, allowing them to access the university based on their adjusted score.
b) Specific Competency Tests (PCE) (not always required)
Some universities and degree programs additionally require specific competencies to enroll. To take these tests—or simply to improve your university entrance score (in your case, the UNEDasiss score, converted from 0 to 14)—you have the option to take tests according to the degree or studies you choose. These tests are organized by UNED (National Distance Education University).
It should be noted that the Specific Competency Tests (PCE) are not mandatory, but they can greatly help you improve your score. They are the equivalent of the EBAU, or university entrance exam, for Spanish students. In simple terms, they are tests that allow you to raise your score if, for example, you cannot access a degree with your current grade in your home country.
c) B1–B2 Spanish Level
Most Spanish universities require proof of a minimum Spanish level to pursue university studies, especially for undergraduate and master’s programs taught in Spanish. This level is usually between B1 and B2, depending on the university, the type of program, and the linguistic demands of the course.
Proof can be provided through official Spanish as a Foreign Language certificates from the Instituto Cervantes or through internal tests from the university itself. It is an essential requirement both for admission and for successfully following the classes. We have included a link with the B2 exam contents according to the Instituto Cervantes. d) Pre-registration
It is necessary to complete the pre-registration process for a degree or program according to the deadlines set by each university or region. These deadlines are generally between June and July.
Some universities have quotas for international students, meaning they reserve between 1% and 3% of their places for them. In such cases, there may not be a specific registration phase. It is always recommended to contact the university you are interested in directly to clarify this point.
e) Admission
To study a specific degree, it is necessary to meet the cutoff score. This is the minimum grade required to access a degree; this system serves as a filter to determine whether a student can enter a program based on their score. For Spanish students, this score is the result of the high school average and the EBAU (university entrance exam). For EU students who want to study in Spain, it is the UNEDasiss score. The cutoff or admission score for a degree is calculated on a scale from 0 to 14.
It is also at this admission stage that the Spanish language certificate is specifically required: at least a B1 level, or in some cases a B2, depending on the university and program.
3. Required documentation and coverage for your stay in Spain (within the first 3 months of your arrival in Spain)
Once you have been admitted to a Spanish university, you can start the procedures required to remain in Spain as a student for a period longer than 3 months. These procedures and requirements are necessary for your stay in Spain and must be completed within the first three months in the country from the moment you arrive.
This requirement is only necessary for students who are going to undertake programs longer than 3 months (90 days). To obtain it, you must register with the Central Register of Foreign Nationals and, as a result, receive the EU Citizen Registration Certificate, which will include your NIE number. The NIE is an identification number and a physical document required to carry out procedures in Spain if you stay for more than 3 months: it is necessary to reside in Spain and also to sign contracts, open bank accounts, and move freely within Spain and the EU.
> Deadline to apply for EU Citizen Registration: within the first 3 months after your arrival in Spain.
> Where to apply for EU Citizen Registration: Foreigners´Office or National Police stations (always by appoinment).
European Health Insurance Card or private insurance with full coverage in Spain.
A sworn statement declaring that you have sufficient financial means so as not to become a burden on the Spanish social assistance system.
Form 790-012 is an official National Police form that certifies you have paid the fees for the issuance of your EU Citizen Registration Certificate and all procedures required for your legal registration.
A document certifying your pre-registration or enrollment in a university or an official educational institution in Spain.
Although not mandatory, it is recommended. Municipal registration consists of registering with the local town hall of the municipality where you live, stating that this is your address.

Non-EU students: Required documentation and coverage to study in Spain
Students from outside the European Union who wish to study in Spain must meet a series of mandatory administrative and academic requirements. These procedures must be planned in advance, as in most cases they are completed before traveling to Spain. Understanding these requirements is essential to avoid delays in admission, visa issues, or the inability to start your studies.
1.- Academic requirements for universities
The UNEDasiss access credential is the central document in the process.
> It certifies that your foreign secondary/high school studies allow access to university in Spain.

> It is requested by both EU and non-EU students.

Without this credential, in most cases it is not possible to continue with the university application process.
In most Spanish universities, degree programs, and master’s programs, international students are required to have a minimum Spanish level of B1 or B2. These levels are considered—and rightly so—the minimum needed to attend university classes, understand them, and complete the required assessments (both oral and written). This certification must be obtained through institutions accredited by the Instituto Cervantes. Frequently asked questions about obtaining a visa to study in Spain
The student visa must be applied for at the Spanish consulate or embassy in your country. It can only be obtained at these two places. Keep in mind that it is not possible to change the type of visa once you are in Spain, so it is essential to check that all the previous requirements needed to obtain it are correct. > From your home country (outside Spain): it is necessary to obtain the student visa between 1 and 3 months before arriving in Spain. It is advisable to book an appointment at the embassy or consulate as early as possible, as during certain periods (such as summer) it can be very difficult to get an immediate appointment. The most recommended month to apply is March, in order to submit the required documentation in July.
> From Spain (if you already have a Schengen visa): if you are already in Spain as a tourist, you can apply for a stay authorization for studies as long as it is done 60 days before classes start and at least 30 days before your current visa expires.
To obtain the visa, you must contact the nearest Spanish embassy or consulate in your country of residence. From there, you will need to meet a series of requirements in order to be granted the visa.
Requirements and documentation needed to obtain a student visa to study in Spain
The passport must:
Have validity covering your entire intended stay in Spain.
Have blank pages for the visa.
A passport close to expiration may delay or prevent the visa from being granted.
Private health insurance must cover the student’s entire stay in Spain and meet specific requirements:

Basic travel insurance is generally not accepted for a student visa.
The official admission or enrollment letter must be issued by a recognized educational institution in Spain (university, higher education school, or accredited center).

Exact program duration (start and end dates).
Number of weekly class hours.

Without a clear and detailed admission letter, the visa may be denied.
The proof of payment certifies that the student has paid, either fully or partially, for the course for which they are applying for a visa.
Usually accepted:
Full payment of the program.
Payment of an initial enrollment or reservation fee.
The proof must:
Identify the student.
Indicate the amount paid and the currency.
Show the name of the educational institution receiving the payment.
This document demonstrates the genuine intention to study and is a key element for the visa approval.
The student must demonstrate that they have enough financial resources to support themselves in Spain during their period of study.
Usually accepted:
Recent bank statements.
Scholarship or financial aid certificates.
Sponsorship letter, when applicable.
The purpose is to show that the student can cover accommodation, living expenses, and study costs without needing to work.
To apply for a student visa for Spain, non-EU students must provide a criminal record certificate from the country or countries where they have resided over the past years, covering the last 5 years.
This certificate must meet the following requirements:
Be official, issued by the competent authority of the country of origin or residence.
Certify that the student has no criminal record.
Have been issued recently (usually within the last 3 to 6 months, depending on the consulate).
Be legalized or apostilled, when required.
Be accompanied by a sworn translation into Spanish if the document is not originally in Spanish.
This document is mandatory for long-term study programs and is part of the administrative review prior to visa approval.
For a student visa in Spain, documents must meet the following requirements:
>Legalization or apostille: certifies that the document is authentic and valid in Spain.
>Sworn translation into Spanish: mandatory if the document is not in Spanish; it must be done by an official translator.
>Included documents: academic degrees, grade certificates, criminal record certificate, and other official documents.
First, the documents are legalized or apostilled, and then they are translated. These translations must be done by sworn translators; ordinary translations are not accepted.
3. Requirements for your stay in Spain (after arrival): obtaining the TIE
After applying for the visa, once you arrive in Spain, you must obtain the TIE (Foreigner Identity Card). Upon arrival in Spain, you need to register your stay at the Foreigners’ Office and, if your program lasts more than six months, apply for the TIE.
The TIE is the document that certifies the legal residence of international students in Spain for stays longer than six months. Although the visa allows entry into the country, the TIE is mandatory to study and carry out administrative procedures. The TIE is required for any stay longer than six months, and although the visa allows you to study, without the TIE you can hardly do anything in Spain: open a bank account, rent an apartment, access certain services, etc.
Frequently asked questions about obtaining the TIE to study in Spain
> At the Foreigners’ Office or an authorized police station in the province where you will reside.
> It is recommended to book an appointment online in advance (the appointment system is mandatory in most cities). You can do so at this link:
> Within 30 days of arriving in Spain.
The student visa must be valid at the time of the application.
> Official application form (EX-17): Form EX-17 is the official document that international students must complete to apply for the Foreigner Identity Card (TIE) in Spain. It includes personal details, information about your residence, and the purpose of your stay, and must be submitted along with your passport, visa, and other required documents at the Foreigners’ Office.
It is mandatory, and without it, the TIE cannot be processed. However, the documentation required to obtain the TIE is basically the same as for the student visa:
> Passport and student visa.
> Admission or enrollment letter from the educational institution.
> Valid health insurance.
> Proof of financial means.
> Recent passport-sized photos.
> Proof of payment of the corresponding fee (approx. €12–15).
As mentioned, the required documentation is almost identical to that needed for the student visa application to study in Spain.
The processing time varies depending on the city and workload of the Foreigners’ Office. Generally, it takes 20 to 40 days from the appointment until the card is issued.
During this period, a receipt is provided that certifies the legality of your stay.
It must be collected in person at the office where the application was submitted. The card includes personal information, a photo, and your NIE (Foreigner Identity Number).

As a general requirement, most Spanish universities ask for a certified B1 or B2 level in order to study at them. The reason is that these are the most functional levels of Spanish: they correspond to an intermediate and an advanced level respectively, which are necessary to understand classes and to express yourself properly, both in writing and orally.
Therefore, in general, B1 is the minimum level required; however, exceptionally, for some procedures and courses, an A2 level may be sufficient. For this reason, if you only need an A2 level, you can enroll to complete this level. Payment can be made via bank transfer, Bizum, PayPal, or TransferWise (the payer covers any fees). We provide a receipt for each payment if requested, and a contract before the course starts specifying all conditions. We are a registered entity with the State Service of Training Entities, and all our information is public.
